ALEX ASHER – ‘SLOW MOTION’ – DEBUT ALBUM
An ecstatic soundtrack for modern times, rooted in tradition

BROOKLYN, NY – Trombonist/Producer Alex Asher wears many hats. As a bandleader, he fronts celebrated future soul outfit People’s Champs and organizes Los Cumpleaños, the genre- bending electro-cumbia ensemble. As a trombonist, Asher and his horn section, The Superpower Horns, co-wrote and recorded the arrangements for Beyoncé’s 4, including the Grammy-winning bop “Love on Top.” On June 26th, Asher will display his skills as a music producer alongside his skills as a trombonist, releasing the self-titled debut of his newest project, Slow Motion.

These eight ecstatic songs showcase Asher’s deep understanding and appreciation of Latin/AfroCuban Jazz, alongside a pop sensibility that is at once playful and meditative. This is music to move to, delivered by a band that is disciplined, minimalistic and intentional.

Slow Motion formed during the pandemic, playing a weekly residency at Brooklyn’s Wild Birds. “Like a DJ, I went deep into my record collection and curated a set of songs for everyone living in New York City in 2020,” says Asher. “A set of music to bring joy back into people’s lives.”

Wild Birds closed in 2022, but Asher knew that Slow Motion would live another life. In 2024, he went into the studio at Figure 8 Recording, bringing Puerto Rico/New York-based drummer Joel Mateo (Buscabulla), bassist Michael LaValle (Emily King), and pianist Julia Chen (Lulada Club) with him. Chris Botta (Yaeji) co-produced, engineered and mixed the album. Max Zooi (Sammy Rae) assisted with synthesizer programming.

The result is an absolute triumph, a love letter to the jazz sounds Asher cut his teeth on, filtered through a kaleidoscope of 80s-era synth pop. One hears echoes of Donald Byrd, The Mizell Brothers, Pharoah Sanders and Dizzy Gillespie’s ‘Cubop’, yet the album is nothing short of a reflection of the now. Asher is part of a new crop of jazz musicians-turned-producers pushing the genre into the future.

Alex Asher’s Slow Motion took root during a time that demanded joy; their album is a rousing reminder that joy–like resistance–is an act of devotion.
